Stop Apologizing for Your Recovery

woman apologizes to another woman

If you are in recovery, there are probably people who expect you to apologize for certain things. Be proud of being in recovery! You don’t have to apologize for who you are. It’s a huge step to enter into recovery, and people who are standing in your way don’t deserve to be there. Setting boundaries is important, and one of them should be that you stop apologizing for your recovery. Below are some helpful tools to learn more about setting boundaries and not apologizing for the new you.

Don’t Be Afraid to Say No

Sometimes, when someone asks us to do something, we say no and throw an apology in there. If something isn’t good for us, learn to say no without the apology. This isn’t meant to be rude, but it reminds you that you shouldn’t feel bad for saying no when something doesn’t serve you. Agreeing to something you don’t want to do will only bring conflict later on. Don’t be afraid to say no!

Don’t Be Afraid to Stick up for Yourself

Realizing who you are and what you need is important. You have your own voice, which is something you need to find in your recovery. Take control of your recovery and stick up for yourself and what you need. Once you stick up for yourself, it’s important to stick to those boundaries. Don’t be afraid to stick up for yourself!

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Space

Space is healthy. You don’t need to be around someone all of the time if it is impacting your mental health and recovery negatively. Create physical and mental space when you need it. Set the boundary of telling someone that you need space. Don’t feel guilty about asking for what you need. You are only letting yourself down if you don’t stick to your boundary. Don’t be afraid to ask for space!
