The Power of Silence

man meditates in silence

You may have heard of the rising popularity of silent retreats. While spending days, or even weeks, in complete silence used to be a practice mostly reserved for monks, it is now becoming increasingly common for regular people to find value in extended silence.  Some people participate in a silent retreat to seek heightened spiritual awareness, while others believe it helps them foster strong mental health and creativity. While silent retreats are offered by meditation centers around the world, you don’t necessarily have to leave your house to enjoy the benefits of meditative silence.   Remaining silent for a long period of time, whether it be an hour or a week, can feel daunting.  You may even wonder why people volunteer for such a task. While the initial adjustment may not come easily, the benefits of silence may surprise you.  Typically, when we are not talking or being talked to, our brains are shuffling through an endless to-do list, anxious worrying, and regrets of the past.  During a silent retreat, you will likely spend the beginning of your journey meditating and attempting to quiet the mind. Eventually, usually within 24 hours, your thoughts will become more spacious and easier to dismiss, and you will begin to settle into a peaceful place of simply being.

An Opportunity to Work Through Complex Emotions and Trauma

Without distractions, suppressed feelings may come to the surface, and you will be forced to address them head-on.  Meditating in silence can help you forgive yourself and others for mistakes of the past. While gong on a structured week-long silent retreat is great, you can also experience a mini retreat in your home.  Simply let your loved ones know your intention, turn off all electronic devices, and sit silently in a peaceful space for the day with plenty of nutritious snacks. You will be amazed at what your mind and spirit can accomplish in a day!
