Every relationship needs boundaries. It’s healthy to set boundaries with yourself and others. Your relationship is not healthy if there are no boundaries. Continue reading to learn more about how you can set boundaries in your relationships.  

Don’t Fall Victim to the Stigma

Stigma is all over the addiction and mental health. Recognize what you might hold onto that may not be true. The sooner you can let go of the stigma, the sooner your relationship will flourish.  

Don’t Take Anything Personally

Confusing behavior can be hard to make sense of. This is why you shouldn’t try to. Your loved one is not trying to hurt you. Try not to take it personally.  

Find Ways to Improve

Improve yourself by attending therapy together. This can help both of the parties involved. Know that your loved one is not their disease and neither are you. Try to create more opportunities for improvement.   

Get Support

Support systems are essential. Reach out to friends and family apart from the loved one you are focused on setting boundaries with. This helps to strengthen your relationships while encouraging your loved one to build their other relationships, too.   

Set Expectations

You should expect decent behavior from your loved one that has a mental illness. Tell them what you expect of them and hold them to it. This helps keep you safe while communicating what you need.   


Communication skills are absolutely necessary for any relationship to succeed. Try telling your loved one how you feel. Don’t focus on what they are doing wrong. This helps keep respect in the relationship.  

Put Yourself in Their Shoes

Putting yourself in your loved one’s shoes allows you to understand what they are going through, which can give you some perspective as to why they are acting the way they are. This can also make a big difference in your loved one’s respect and trust in you. Don’t disregard your feelings, but keep them in mind when you step into their shoes.  

Focus on Your Goals

Focus on the goals you have set for yourself and the big picture. These are your larger goals. Don’t get petty over small, unnecessary things. Keep your focus on the big picture.   

Be Direct

Use direct, simple, and clear language. Focus on one thing at a time. Don’t hint at what you mean — be direct. Communication does nothing if you can’t communicate effectively.   

Make It Known

Express your needs and what you want out of the situation. This helps your loved one feel loved and respected. Make your needs and why you need them known.
