How To Find A Therapist

woman meets with therapist

Finding a professional that you connect with can be a difficult task. It’s also an important one that you must give ample thought to. If you don’t feel like you can trust the person you’re spilling your thoughts to, then you must work on finding someone you do trust. On the other hand, if your therapist is trying too hard to be your friend, they probably aren’t the person for you. You want to find a happy medium: someone who you are comfortable with, trust, and is kind and understanding. What should you be looking for when shopping for a therapist? Arbor Behavioral Healthcare has got you covered. Continue reading for more tips.

Find Someone You Connect With

Finding someone you can connect with is important. You must be able to trust the person and feel comfortable opening up to them. A connection can also be through the type of therapy you’re looking for. Their approach to therapy must match what you’re looking to get out of your therapy. If your therapist is more client-centered, but you are looking for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, you probably aren’t in the right place. Finding like-minded approaches is important. Even if the approach is the same as what you’re looking for, there may not be a natural connection there. That’s okay! You don’t want to force a connection. Try someone new if you’re struggling with your current therapist. It may take a few trials for you to find someone you connect with.

Budget is Important

Therapy can be very expensive. You must know how much you are able to spend and then set a budget around that. Budgeting is difficult, but it is crucial. If your budget is on the low end, ask the therapist if they offer a sliding scale. This is more of a “pay what you can” approach. Insurance also covers some therapists, but make sure yours takes insurance before you establish a regular visit pattern with them. You don’t want to get too attached and then have to change a therapist because they do not take your insurance. Lastly, colleges and universities often offer discounted sessions with students who are in training. If you’re open to this, don’t be afraid to inquire at your local college or university.

Be Open

Being open and honest is a must in therapy. You won’t get anything out of therapy if you are not willing to be vulnerable. A good therapist will not judge you. They will be open-minded and willing to help. Don’t hold back; just be yourself!
