Recovery: A Choice?

woman begins meeting with addiction recovery group

We have previously discussed how addiction is not a choice, it is a disease. The more we talk about addiction as a disease, the less stigma there will be in the world surrounding substance use disorders. What is a choice, however, is recovery. Those with addictions must choose the help that is put out there for them. We already know that there is a stigma out there regarding addictions, but there is also a stigma about recovery. The people stigmatizing those in recovery truly do not have a clue about how much time, effort, and dedication goes into recovery. We know recovery can be difficult, but we also know that recovery is a choice you must make each and every day. It can be hard, but it’s so worth it.

Myth: Recovery Is Doesn’t Take Any Effort.

People who stigmatize those dealing with substance use disorders often throw around the notion that recovery is simple. They question why someone can’t just stop using the substance they’re addicted to. We’re here to tell you that recovery does take effort and a lot of it. We don’t want you to be under the impression that recovery is simple. It’s something you must work at every day. We can help you, though. We give you the tools you need to succeed. We give you healthy coping skills so that you can make your sobriety the top thing on your to-do list.

Truth: Recovery Is a Choice.

Recovery is a conscious choice you must say yes to every day. One difficult part of recovery is that you cannot pick and choose which parts you will comply with and which parts you will not comply with. You can’t pick it apart like a dinner you don’t like. You can’t take the good parts and push the rest to the other side of your plate and toss them in the trash. Recovery doesn’t work that way. You must choose to believe in yourself. You must choose to seek treatment. You must choose to live in the moment. These things are all necessary to make the choice of recovery.
