Self-Care

Self-care is a necessary tool to have when you are in recovery from substance use or a co-occurring mental illness. It’s one of the most important things you can do for your well-being. Being mindful and taking into account the energy that you are taking in and giving off is important. You must keep both your physical and mental health in mind if you want to stay on the road to recovery. Self-care is a huge part of this. Continue reading to learn eight different types of self-care and how you can implement each of them.

Personal

Knowing who you are and what you believe in is an essential part of personal self-care. It’s important to know what brings you joy so that you can implement that into your routine. Learn to speak up for yourself in situations where you need to exert yourself. This is all a part of personal self-care.

Physical

Physical self-care includes your exercise habits, sleeping habits, and eating habits. Habits like this are important and we must be mindful of how we fuel our brains and bodies through exercise, sleep, and eating. We aren’t suggesting that you run a marathon every day or cut out every single sugar. We just want you to find a happy medium.

Social

Having a good support system is important and helpful in getting you through difficult things. Even though you may feel like isolating when you aren’t feeling well, push yourself to meet up with friends or family. It doesn’t have to be a huge gathering. Just go for a walk or grab a coffee. Another part of social self-care is setting healthy boundaries. Knowing yourself and knowing when to say yes and no is important.

Emotional

Knowing yourself and your emotions play an important role in how you treat yourself. Do you treat yourself with kindness and compassion? Or are you extremely hard on yourself when you shouldn’t be? You must show your emotions in a safe and healthy way.

Spiritual

You should practice meditation or mindfulness on a regular basis. This could be through an organized religion or a higher power of your own understanding. Whatever it is, spiritual self-care is important.

Spatial

You should feel safe in your environment, which includes work, school, and home life. Being comfortable is a part of spatial self-care.

Financial

You should be creating a budget and sticking to it. This includes paying bills on time and managing your money. Saving money on a regular basis is important, too.

Work

Work-life can be difficult, but you need to make sure your needs are being met. This includes setting boundaries when necessary. Make sure you are feeling safe, earning a fair wage, and crafting healthy relationships. Work-life is a part of self-care, too.
