What Is Meant by the Term Recovery?

Not everyone knows or understands what is meant by the term recovery. At its most basic, the term is used to describe the process or journey that an individual who has completed treatment for a substance use disorder and/or mental health disorder goes through.

In a nutshell, here are a few of the goals that an individual in recovery strives for:

  •       Ongoing improvement of their overall health and wellness
  •       Endeavoring to achieve their full potential
  •       Living a self-directed life through the use of appropriate coping skills

As you can see, recovery is an ongoing process that is nurtured over time. Many professionals ascribe to the view that there are four basic dimensions to recovery, an event which is first preceded by getting help.

The four major dimensions of recovery can be thought of as:

  1.     Purpose. Purpose involves engaging in meaningful daily activities and working toward independence. Examples of meaningful activities include participating in society, e.g., going to school, working, volunteering and caring for one’s family.
  2.     Home. Living in a safe, stable environment is a crucial component for recovery.
  3.     Health. Recovery involves making choices that support our healthy psychological and physical well-being.
  4.     Community. Engaging in a social network that supports an individual’s recovery helps many to build new, healthy relationships and practice appropriate coping skills.

The importance of community to one’s recovery cannot be underestimated and often takes the form of family members who encourage and support their loved one’s recovery process. Similarly, the support of friends and peers has a vital role to play in recovery and may take the form of participation in a 12-Step group such as A.A. or N.A. Finally, for many hope is the foundation upon which recovery rests. This applies to all of us really, for, without a sense of optimism and hope for the future, any road forward is darker and scarier. Hope on the other hand provides a bright light and a compass by which to travel. The recovery process can be broken down into generalized categories and steps, but in the end, the journey is a highly personal one. Recovery is exemplified by ongoing growth but setbacks are also to be expected as setbacks are a normal part of everyday life.
