  2.     Home. Living in a safe, stable environment is a crucial component for recovery.
  3.     Health. Recovery involves making choices that support our healthy psychological and physical well-being.
  4.     Community. Engaging in a social network that supports an individual’s recovery helps many to build new, healthy relationships and practice appropriate coping skills.

The importance of community to one’s recovery cannot be underestimated and often takes the form of family members who encourage and support their loved one’s recovery process. Similarly, the support of friends and peers has a vital role to play in recovery and may take the form of participation in a 12-Step group such as A.A. or N.A.

Finally, for many hope is the foundation upon which recovery rests. This applies to all of us really, for, without a sense of optimism and hope for the future, any road forward is darker and scarier. Hope on the other hand provides a bright light and a compass by which to travel.

The recovery process can be broken down into generalized categories and steps, but in the end, the journey is a highly personal one. Recovery is exemplified by ongoing growth but setbacks are also to be expected as setbacks are a normal part of everyday life.
