“The building blocks to wellbeing remain the same all year round.”

This quote comes from Suzy Reading, author of “Winter Rituals to Lift Your Mood,” for In The Moment magazine. These building blocks include exercising, monitoring your nutrition, crafting a healthy environment, making time for rest and play, and connecting socially. These are great things to do when you are feeling seasonal sadness or even just ordinary melancholy throughout the year. To help you bust out of the gloom, try to mix up your routines by incorporating one of these building blocks to wellness.

Movement

Making sure your posture is good — meaning that we are standing tall and looking up — sends a strong message to our brains that we are doing well. Keep your posture in mind when you are walking for exercise or even sitting down at the dinner table. You can also implement movement in your routine by stretching or doing other simple activities that get you moving. Try taking a class as well!

Nutrition

Nutrition keeps our brain and body healthy. Perhaps more importantly, it promotes social connection, another one of the building blocks to wellness. When you come together with friends and family, think about the food you’re consuming. Mealtimes are about more than the food, though. Enjoy connecting with others while observing what’s around you. Savor your food and drink and have a good time!

Environment

You can create an environment that is comfortable and promotes peace. Try to do this by crafting a healthy space wherever you spend most of your time. If you’re spending time outside, make sure you take in your environment and appreciate the world around you.

Rest and play

Rest and play are two things that humans do not get enough of. Try to give yourself a break and allow your brain and body to rest and play. These two things complement each other and give you a break from your hectic daily schedule.

Social connection

Connection helps fuel our souls. Make an effort to see your friends and family and have a good time. You deserve that!
