What Happens to Your Life After One Month Alcohol-Free?

man celebrate one month without alcohol

Giving up alcohol for a month or longer has become very popular in recent years, with trends like “Dry January” encouraging people to participate by cleansing their body of alcoholic toxins after a holiday season presumably drenched in wine and beer.  But the amazing benefits of going without alcohol for one month should tell us how much our body craves being alcohol-free, and how healthy and productive a life without alcohol could be. This is especially true for those who believe they may have developed a dependence on alcohol and are considering seeking professional help to quit drinking for good. A study conducted earlier this year took a look at the many benefits of giving up alcohol for an entire month and found that while health was a major factor, overall quality of life also improved without alcohol.  Participants in the study reported saving money, feeling more in control of their habits, learning to have fun without alcohol, improved quality of sleep, higher energy levels, weight loss, better concentration, and clearer skin.  If quitting alcohol for just one month can do all this, it is easy to imagine what a year or more could do. Alcohol use increases the risk of several cancers, liver failure, and many mental health issues.  These issues are chronic and long-term and may shorten an individual’s lifespan. The more immediate effects of alcohol abuse, however, include decreased quality of relationships, poor job performance, low energy, and decreased self-esteem.  Choosing to go alcohol-free for a month is a great decision even for the casual drinker, but for those who believe they might have a problematic relationship with alcohol, it is best to find a way into lasting sobriety.
