What are Affirmations and How can They Improve Your Life?

You may have heard of the concept of affirmations in relation to spirituality or mental wellness.  The practice is based on the idea that we can speak things into existence. Many people believe this is a mystical law of the universe, but psychology credits the power of the human mind with the success of affirmations.  Affirmations are statements repeated with conviction to ourselves about an intended truth. They can be said aloud in the mirror every morning or as part of a silent monologue during meditation. There are several techniques for utilizing affirmations that can increase the impact of this practice in your life. Affirmations are the most powerful when they are used to counter negative beliefs you hold about yourself.  Most of us have been told by parents, teachers, or someone close to us that we are lacking in some area. When these things are said to us repeatedly, especially as children, we tend to internalize them.  By taking the time to consider what negative things you believe about yourself, and creating an affirmation to declare the opposite, you can begin to reverse damaging thought patterns. For example, if you have always been told you are overly sensitive, and therefore weak, you can affirm the positive interpretation of those qualities by saying, “I am strong,” and “I am passionate.”
