Turn ‘I Can’t’ Into ‘I Can’

man struggles with lack of confidence

Your internal critic is something that may rear its ugly head every once in a while during your recovery. Throughout your recovery, you’ve got to learn to silence the inner critic and trust in your ability to keep pushing forward. It can be difficult, but soon you’ll be able to turn your ‘I can’t’ into an ‘I can!’ Continue reading to learn more about motivating yourself during your recovery.

Self-belief

What you think to be true of yourself often is true. It turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy. “The ideas we internalize about ourselves can be both positive and negative, but when these affect our self-belief, we can struggle,” says Harriet Griffey, author of “Yes, You Can” for In The Moment magazine. “Positive self-belief comes from challenging our internal critic and taking steps to fuel confidence in our own judgment, skills, and abilities.” Whatever you think to be true usually does come true. This is the case for both positive and negative self-belief. Changing your thoughts can be difficult, but it’s an essential tool to have when you are recovery from depression, anxiety, substance use, or other mental illnesses. So, how can we do this? It’s more easily said than done, and we know this. However, you can change the way you think. It just takes practice.

Challenge automatic thoughts

Usually, if we are having automatic thoughts, they aren’t the most positive ones in the world. One way to change the way you think is to challenge the automatic thoughts that pop into your head throughout the day. When one comes up, tell yourself that you are stopping that thought. Then, try to replace it with a more positive one. The more often you do this, the more likely you will be to naturally go toward the positive thought in the first place. Challenging those thoughts is a huge step in the right direction of turning your ‘I can’t’ into an ‘I can!’

What’s holding you back?

Often, people think that believing in yourself is self-indulgent. This just isn’t the case. You can believe in yourself without sounding cocky or selfish. Being confident in yourself is the key. You must know that you can do it. Without this belief, you cannot succeed.
