Health coach Suzy Glaskie says, “Simple swaps and energy-sustaining snacks can help us sail through our working day.” We simply have to know what those swaps should be and what snacks can sustain our energy. Arbor Behavioral Healthcare can help you learn more about the food that you should be fueling your body with. Here are some suggestions you can begin practicing on your own.

Staying level

Our bodies cannot work to their full potential if our blood sugar is out of whack, and our brain is feeling sluggish. “Coupled with the drop in cognitive functioning, our mood is affected too,” says Glaskie of what happens when we indulge in foods we shouldn’t be snacking on. “So instead of feeling emotionally resilient and speaking calmly and constructively, we snap and say things we regret.” This can be fixed with some changes, says Glaskie. This first is to make sure we eat protein with every meal. Instead of eating toast or sugary cereal for breakfast, eat something packed with protein. “Because the protein and good fats in these nutritious powerhouses stabilized my blood sugar, I was able to concentrate for the whole morning,” Glaskie says. Good fats also curb cravings and keep you feeling full. “These nutrient-rich foods will feed your brain and protect your long-term health.” It’s also important to remember that “snacking is no substitute for a well-balanced meal.” If it’s around mealtime, try to avoid snacking your way through. Sit down for a healthy and balanced meal. If it’s not mealtime and you’re just reaching for a snack, keep in mind what foods you should be avoiding and what you can replace them with.
