Check In

Your recovery is a constant adaptation. Self-awareness helps you be able to adapt. Your communication with yourself needs to be just as good as your communication with others. If you are in tune with yourself, you’ll be able to see what’s happening. What’s going well? What’s not going well? Self-awareness is key. You don’t want to get comfortable and just go with the flow. Comfort isn’t good in recovery. Addiction feeds off of comfort. If you want to keep your sobriety and keep moving forward, you must check in with yourself. Continue reading for more information about how you can check in with yourself.

How Am I Feeling Today?

Ask yourself first how you are doing in the current moment. Be honest with yourself. If you lie and tell yourself things are going well when they are not, you aren’t helping yourself. If things aren’t going well, face them. This is the first question you must ask because the rest of the check in questions stem from this one. How are things going? Well or poorly? Are you happy with the way things are going or are you worried about the place you are headed to? How is your body physically reacting? What about your environment? What choices are you making to better your recovery?

What Is Not Working?

Once you are able to figure out how you are feeling, you want to see what isn’t working for yourself. Could you be adapting better? Should you be doing things differently that will ultimately help you stay on your path and move toward your goals? Are you avoiding things you should be engaging in? Can you do something to make your sobriety easier?

What Is Working?

There has to be something going well. Figure out what that thing is. Try to find a balance between the negatives and the positives. Even if you are checking in with yourself for the first time in a while, it is a good thing and you should recognize that. What is working well? What changes have you made that are working?

What Do I Need Today?

What do you need to help further your recovery and sobriety? Your answers to the previous questions will help you answer this one. Do you need space? Do you need support? Do you need extra help from the outside? Don’t be ashamed to ask for what you need. You deserve help.

What Am I Proud of Today?

Being proud of how far you’ve come is something to celebrate! Something has to be going well, no matter how strong. What are you doing well that is worth celebrating? Answering this question can motivate you to keep more forward.

What Can I Let Go of Today?

Not everything will be going well, and that’s okay. Let go of the things that aren’t going your way. If they don’t serve you, don’t give them your time. What isn’t serving you? Can you let go of it?
