What is a Life Coach?

man meets with life coach

You may have heard of a life coach, or you may be coming across the term for the first time.  The concept can seem a little “out there” to people who don’t understand what a life coach does, but utilizing a coaching style of guidance during important transitions in life or when you want to achieve a particular goal can be very helpful.  While both life coaches and therapists encourage you to build self-esteem and make healthy choices, their approach to life’s problems and interaction with their clients tends to differ. Life coaches are just one more resource that can help people who are struggling to create big change for themselves and find happiness. When you begin working with a life coach, you may share a particular goal or set an intention for your work together.  Much like a personal trainer would structure a fitness and nutrition program based on their expertise and your personal circumstances, a life coach can help you create a plan for bettering all aspects of your life.  You can come to a life coach to ask for advice when you are feeling lost, and they will help you to follow your own intuition while keeping you focused on your goals. Life coaches approach each client as someone capable of change and motivate them towards their dreams while also helping them see their circumstances from a different perspective. Life coaches used in addiction treatment, sometimes called recovery coaches, are coaches that help clients navigate life in recovery.  This may include helping individuals to recognize their own strengths, express themselves creatively, work on their health, and stay motivated.  Unlike therapists, recovery coaches are not experts on mental illness and are unlikely to focus on your past. Coaches are more concerned with your present and future, and how to help you achieve your goals.
