If you’re just getting started on your journey towards healing and restoration, congratulations! Recovery is an incredibly beautiful, courageous, transformative journey to be on – and you’ll find that through support and resources, you’re able to overcome far more than you ever thought you could. It’s normal to feel a bit apprehensive in recovery, and one common question that is asked is, “How long should I stay in treatment for?” In an ideal scenario, a person would be able to complete treatment in 30 days or less – but the reality is that true healing takes place gradually – and for many people, treatment may last for several months; we all have different needs and the length of time you spend in treatment should really reflect on what would work best for your personal and optimal wellbeing.
Motivating Factors for Success in Recovery
A 2016 article published by Science Daily covered some of the most important factors to helping a person push past barriers in treatment. After conducting interviews with 32 participants who were seeking treatment in a long-term substance abuse program, the following were found to be incredibly influential on a person’s success in recovery:
· Support – personal networks, such as friends and family, have an incredibly important role in a person’s addiction recovery. If loved ones can come together and support a client in reaching their recovery goals, they’re much more likely to achieve them – but that’s not all. For those who struggle with personal support networks, support received from one’s healthcare team and peers in recovery can greatly influence motivation, too.
· Distance – clients should try to limit contact with and distance themselves from people they used to abuse substances with. This will help them focus on grounding themselves and creating a true life of sobriety.
· Collaboration – working closely with their therapist and healthcare team, clients can create a personalized treatment program that meets their needs
