There are many myths about alcoholism. Many mistakenly believe that everyone can stop drinking alcohol at any time, that drinking is a choice. After years of research it is now known that certain environmental factors contribute to the risks of alcoholism if someone begins to drink. Once someone drinks certain changes take place throughout their body that lead to the body’s dependence on drinking. The body becomes physically and mentally tolerant of and dependent on the substance and it’s no longer a simple choice to stop. Perhaps they started drinking because they thought it made them look glamorous and cool since all of their favorite entertainers did it. Many individuals have been drinking for some time and now that they want to quit they have found that they can’t. Many men and women often feel ashamed and alone and have come to believe that they are the only one and that no one understands or cares what they are going through. It really doesn’t matter the reason why an individual began drinking or how many times they have tried to quit and failed, there are people who care and that want to help them win in their struggle over alcohol.

After individuals attend individual and group counseling and learn more about the reasons why they started drinking and how to avoid drinking in the future, one of the next critical steps in alcohol rehabilitation is learning to build a support network that will help the alcoholic continue to abstain from alcohol and remain sober. Whether it is one of the groups that apply some form of the 12 Steps or some other type of support group, there is really no substitute to learning how to bond with other alcoholics who are going through the same struggles in order to receive the support that is necessary to remaining sober. Learning how to build systems of support is one of the main critical components of any successful alcohol rehabilitation program.
