Recognizing an Addiction to Painkillers

doctor writes painkiller prescription

Pain management is a complex and controversial science, with many health advocates now warning against the dangers of addictive pain medications.  While there are several different medications that can be taken for pain, those with the most potential for abuse fall into the narcotics category.  These medications are considered by some addiction experts to be over-prescribed by physicians, making them easily attainable and increasing the risks for those vulnerable to addiction.  Taking these medications may start out as an honest attempt at pain relief, but can quickly evolve into a serious drug abuse issue if not handled with extreme caution.

Not Taking As Prescribed

There are many signs to be aware of that may point to addiction when using narcotic pain killers.  If an individual prescribed narcotics for pain find themselves taking the pills to alter their mood or cope with stress, they may be headed down the path to dependency.  Eventually, prescriptions run out, and a person who has developed an addiction may turn to other sources to feed their habit. This can lead to many of the classic signs associated with substance abuse, including asking for money, stealing, decreased work or school performance, and extreme agitation when they aren’t able to obtain their drug.

Permanent Consequences

Addiction to pain medications is a life-altering disease and often requires professional intervention.  These addictions are unique in that they have the insidious ability to ensnare people who would otherwise never abuse substances.  Painkiller addictions have taken entire futures away from successful athletes and promising students, as well as older adults recovering from age-related injuries.  Asking for help may be especially difficult for those struggling with addiction to prescription pain relievers because they often do not believe themselves to fit the stereotype of an “addict”.  The reality is that addiction affects people from all walks of life, and seeking treatment is the best chance of returning to health and happiness.
