Recovery is more than getting sober—it’s about rebuilding a fulfilling life. Whether stepping down from residential treatment or beginning care at the intensive outpatient (IOP) level, individuals face a critical period of transition. The first few weeks outside of highly structured residential treatment can be overwhelming as people work to restore relationships, reestablish careers, and reconnect with their communities. At The Arbor, we provide the support needed during this pivotal time, ensuring that no one must navigate early recovery alone. Through our continuum of care, we help individuals build lasting sobriety and a strong foundation for their future.

After Residential Rehab

The Arbor’s intensive outpatient treatment offers supportive, part-time care for those completing residential treatment or needing continued therapeutic support for drug and alcohol addictions. Our IOP services are delivered by our highly educated and experienced treatment team, who are deeply committed to our patients’ success. A few benefits of The Arbor’s IOP include:

  • One-on-one care. You will experience weekly sessions with one of our clinicians who will be your dedicated individual counselor.
  • Evening IOP. We meet Monday through Thursday evenings, providing a daily source of structure while leaving time for employment and recovery pursuits.
  • Free family services. Your counselor will work with family member(s) whom you designate as they navigate their own parallel healing journey.

We strongly recommend that individuals in our IOP take one step further to strengthen their recovery support system by choosing sober living. Austin has a robust recovery community with many sober living houses. The Arbor also offers a sober living program whose staff closely work with the IOP treatment team. While we work with every individual to ensure our IOP delivers the necessary care to maintain their recovery, our experience – as well as our data – shows that individuals who also enroll in our integrated sober living program are most likely to stay the course in IOP.

Our IOP services are located in Austin, Texas and include our signature blend of addiction treatment modalities, evidence-based practices, experiential workshops, 12-step support, spiritual development, family support, and life skills.

The Arbor's Adult Intensive Outpatient Program

The Arbor’s intensive outpatient program is an eight-week substance abuse and mental health framework designed to provide structure and support while allowing clients to live daily life independently. We ask that participants fully commit to all eight weeks of the program. This ensures that they benefit from all essential topics in our curriculum; it also builds a strong sense of community with their peers in the IOP program. We work with our clients to monitor their progress, transferring patients between levels of care when a different approach is necessary.

Details About Our Texas Addiction IOP

Our program is managed, led, and provided by licensed addiction professionals. Clients will receive ten clinical service hours per week for eight weeks. Our curriculum is built on proven, evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). CBT helps individuals identify and change negative, self-destructive thought patterns, while DBT provides tools for managing intense emotions and navigating interpersonal challenges. ACT encourages people to accept their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, while committing to actions that align with their values. We also integrate 12-step concepts and experiential modalities to treat the whole person, thereby allowing clients to explore different approaches.

Family Therapy Encourages Healing, Forgiveness, and Strength

In addition to this individualized approach, The Arbor IOP strongly encourages family participation and support during the outpatient treatment process.  Clients choose the family member(s) their counselor will connect with weekly to offer support, answer questions, and help rebuild trust. Through these calls in and one or more family therapy sessions, we guide loved ones in their own healing process, fostering open communication and stronger relationships—always with the goal of support, not surveillance. Family members are also eligible to participate in our weekly, professionally facilitated Zoom-based Family Support Group, for free and forever.

Group, family, and individual sessions provide education, counseling, and support that are essential for sustained sobriety in early recovery. Treatment services offered on an outpatient basis help individuals become accustomed to greater independence without feeling alone or overwhelmed. Intensive outpatient treatment also allows participants to continue everyday activities such as school, work, and parenting while receiving supportive services that help them stay sober and succeed.Â
