Alcohol Use During Pregnancy

woman struggles with alcohol cravings while pregnant

It wasn’t long ago that drinking alcohol while pregnant was considered socially acceptable. Today, thanks to an enormous amount of research, it is common knowledge that alcohol use during pregnancy is extremely dangerous for a growing baby.  Unfortunately, because alcohol is a very addictive substance and alcohol use disorder is becoming increasingly common among women, many women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant find that quitting drinking seems impossible. There are still many myths being perpetuated about the benefits of alcohol use during pregnancy, and these inaccuracies may be contributing to some pregnant women’s justification of drinking.  It is critical to the health of women and children that we understand the real consequences of alcohol use during pregnancy. Alcohol use during pregnancy causes such a wide range of issues for a growing baby, that the term used to describe these many disabilities is fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, or FASD.  Babies born with one or more of these health complications may experience physical deformity, intellectual challenges, behavioral issues, heart problems, and many other disabilities. While quitting alcohol as early in a pregnancy as possible may improve the outcome for the child, no time during pregnancy is considered a safe time to drink.  Contrary to a common myth, there is also no amount of alcohol that can be consumed without risk during pregnancy. Any alcohol use may lead to a baby developing FASD.   Many women struggling with alcohol use disorder want to have children someday, and they may be concerned with how they will be able to carry and raise a child.  If you aren’t already a parent, one of the best things you can do for your future child is to take care of your own mental and physical health before becoming pregnant.  By seeking treatment for your addiction, you are ensuring the health and well-being of yourself and any child you may have in the future. If you are already pregnant and still struggling with substance abuse, the sooner you reach out for help the better the outcome will be for both you and your baby.
