What is Sleep Hygiene?

Typically, when we think of hygiene, we think of activities such as brushing our teeth and taking showers.  Sleep hygiene, however, refers to routines that promote quality sleep and increased energy during the day. Researchers continue to uncover and confirm the many benefits of healthy sleep, and studies have found that people who maintain regular sleep hygiene practices tend to experience higher quality sleep over the course of their lifetime.  Better sleep increases focus and productivity during the day and improves mental and physical health overall. By introducing a sleep hygiene practice into your routine, you can begin to foster healthy sleep patterns and experience the endless benefits of high-quality sleep. Getting too much or too little sleep can be equally as detrimental to your health.  Part of good sleep hygiene is ensuring you get the right amount of sleep each day—typically between seven and eight hours.  This amount of sleep should be completed all at once and overnight, rather than over the course of multiple sleep sessions. During the day you can practice good sleep hygiene by exercising regularly and ensuring you receive adequate sunlight exposure to help establish a natural rhythm.  This will help you to remain alert in the daytime and feel drowsy at night.

A Routine Will Be Your #1 Stress-Buster

You should spend the last few hours before bed being mindful of what you ingest, as sugary foods and caffeine can make it difficult to fall and stay asleep.  Relaxing activities such as taking a warm bath or reading a book can help you to let go of the stressors from the day. It also a good idea to avoid screen time by putting away your phone and keeping television out of your bedroom, as the light from these electronics can send signals to your brain to stay awake.  Many people who suffer from sleep issues turn to alcohol to sedate themselves at night, but this habit results in low-quality sleep that prevents your mind and body from recharging for the following day. Additionally, regularly drinking at night to combat sleep issues may result in addiction.
