How Do I Keep From Isolating After the Holidays?

As a new year begins, it can bring a mixed bag of emotions to the forefront of our psyches. When the weather turns colder we often stay inside and isolated, and for many, the holidays created anxiety, depression, and emotionally taxing situations Studies show that for most Americans, loneliness, and sadness often reach a peak during the holiday season. While this may be the case statistically, it doesn’t mean we have to give in to feeling down—why not engage in strategies that energize and empower us to end the year on an upbeat note? Here are a few ideas for how to do just that:

Go Outside!

Just because it’s sweater weather doesn’t mean the great outdoors need to be off-limits. Make that walk to the mailbox a walk around the block, say hi to your neighbors, and admire the crisp weather. If you’re feeling really adventurous take a hike in a scenic area where the leaves are flashing a kaleidoscope of colors en masse. Maintaining your exercise regimen can keep your mood elevated and help unwanted pounds stay at bay. If need be, mix up your routine with indoor yoga or a no-equipment workout such as calisthenics.

Take a Break From Social Media

If you must stay indoors, don’t spend all your time submerged in social media. Tapping into your five senses is a great way to invigorate your mood and energy level. Turn apples into apple pie, light a toasty blaze in the fireplace, or call someone who’s also housebound and would welcome the sound of your voice! Shorter days and longer nights are also a great reason to snuggle up (and maybe fall asleep) with a good book.

Re-energize by Reviewing Your Goals

Now’s the time to review all of the progress you made last year and contemplate new goals. Take time to break down your goals into smaller achievable pieces. Why not get a head start on your 2020 goals today when there are fewer distractions and more time to evaluate and prioritize the things that are really worth pursuing?
