Dealing with Legal Issues During Recovery

Substance abuse often leads to trouble with the law, whether it be a possession charge or an arrest for driving under the influence.  Being caught up in the criminal justice system can be very stressful and oftentimes, confusing. You may be considering hiring a lawyer, worrying about the financial burden of your crime, and unsure of how to ask for help.  The pressure of a criminal charge is one of the many stressors that can lead to relapse, so it is important to use all your resources in order to cope with a difficult situation while also increasing your chances of a positive outcome. Battling addiction is hard work in the best of circumstances, but when you are trying to stay sober while handling complex legal issues, it can seem impossible.  It is important to remember, however, that staying sober can only help your case. A judge who sees that you are taking the steps necessary for your recovery is much more likely to be lenient in your sentencing and fees.  Substance abuse can also lead to unintended consequences such as missed court dates and failure to pay your fees, all of which will only worsen your situation. Staying sober during a time of legal strife can be challenging, but it is necessary in order to alleviate the burden of criminal charges that have no doubt been weighing you down. Just as with any other aspect of recovery, it is important that you ask for help when tackling your legal issues.  If you are in group therapy or a 12-step program, you are likely to find that those around you have fallen into legal trouble themselves at some point, and they may be excellent resources for referrals and advice.  By seeking the help of an addiction counselor, you can learn coping skills to handle your stress. A letter from your therapist documenting your progress in recovery can also go a long way in court. If you haven’t yet sought help for your addiction, and you are facing the legal consequences of your substance abuse, now is the time to reach out.
